8 Essential Self Defense Tools

The nightmare could begin in a hundred different ways... Footsteps creeping up behind you, a masked attacker jumping out of an alley, a hijacker smashing your car window.

When you're attacked, every second counts. Having a self-defense tool on hand could be the difference between overpowering your attacker and becoming a victim.

There are many self-defense tools on the market, but not all of them will help you act quickly and effectively.

We've put together a list of our top 8 essential self-defense tools. These tools will give you the best chance of surviving or escaping an attack.

1. Stun Guns

Stun guns are a great self-defense tool designed to incapacitate your attacker long enough for you to make your escape.

A stun gun has 2 prongs that stick out of the top of the device. When you pull the trigger, a strong electrical current runs between the prongs.

When the prongs touch an attacker, the electrical current immobilizes your attacker by causing loss of muscle control. The electrical energy causes muscles to rapidly contract, lowering your attacker’s blood sugar and draining their energy.

Stun guns work quickly, 2 to 3 seconds of contact is enough to cause painful muscle spasms. Stun guns are non-lethal, cost-effective, and lightweight, making them an ideal everyday self-defense tool.

Stun guns are restricted in certain cities and states, so do your research before buying one.

2. Pepper Spray

Pepper Spray is one of the most popular self-defense weapons. It causes an intense burning sensation in the eyes, nose, and mouth, incapacitating your attacker.

There are many pepper spray variants on the market, but the best option for self-defense is a spray or mist OC pepper spray.

OC, or oleoresin capsicum, is a compound that irritates the eyes, causing severe pain. Unlike other pepper spray compounds, it also inflames the mucous membrane, making it difficult for your attacker to see or breathe. This gives you a chance to make a quick get-away.

Spray or mist pepper sprays are preferable as they allow the OC to be inhaled faster. Stream or foam sprays tend to be less effective.

Be aware that the pepper spray may also affect you, especially if you are struggling with your attacker. Do not carry pepper spray if you have respiratory issues.

3. Self-Defense Keychains

Self-defense keychains are a great on-the-go self-defense tool. They look like ordinary keychains but are quickly converted into weapons when needed.

There are many types of self-defense keychains available, with built-in pepper sprays, stun guns, knives, etc.

A popular style is the Cat Ear keychain. As the name suggests, the cat ear keychain is shaped like a cat’s head. The pointed ears are sharp enough to puncture your attacker’s skin. You can slip your fingers through the large eye-holes, allowing you to use the weapon in much the same way as you would use brass knuckles.

Keychain alarms are also very common. These keychains contain a loud alarm that will scare your attacker away or alert nearby people that you are in danger.

4. Self-defense Knives

A knife is the most reliable self-defense weapon. It will never run out of ammunition or battery power. As long as you keep the blade sharp, it is ready for action 24/7.

There are a variety of knife styles to choose from, the most common being fixed blade knives and folding knives.

Folding knives are easier to conceal, giving you the element of surprise. They are also safer and easier to transport.

Fixed blade knives, on the other hand, are often stronger and easier to maintain. They also allow for a quicker response time as you don’t have to unfold them before use.

Keep in mind that tactical knives are easily the most dangerous tools on this list, quickly becoming lethal weapons in the heat of the moment. Check out this link to see if self-defense knives are legal in your state.

5. Brass Knuckles

Brass knuckles are pieces of metal designed to fit around your knuckles. They are used in hand-to-hand combat to strengthen the force of a punch.

Brass knuckles are a great quick-response weapon. If you know you may be entering a dangerous situation, you can wear them on your hand in advance. This means you don’t have to fumble for a weapon in a panic.

Much like a tactical knife, your brass knuckles will never have a flat battery or run low on ammunition. Brass knuckles require you to get very close to your attacker, so it's important to know how to defend yourself. Consider taking self-defense classes to learn how to evade an attacker.

6. Self-Defense Rings

Self-defense rings arm you with a secret weapon disguised as jewelry.

They come with a variety of features, such as a sharp spike or blade for attacking, a razor-sharp saw for cutting through zip ties, a foldable shim pick for picking locks, or even a small stun prong to shock attackers.

These discrete weapons are small, but powerful, giving you the crucial element of surprise.

7. Tactical Pens

Tactical pens are very versatile and will get you out of a lot of sticky situations. They are easy to transport and are inconspicuous, often overlooked by attackers.

Tactical pens are made from sturdy steel and contain a blunt end designed to break glass, and a functional ballpoint pen that can be used to jab attackers. Some tactical pens also contain flashlights.

While very few people will be able to channel John Wick and incapacitate an attacker with this simple tool, it still serves as a handy back-up.

8. Slapjacks

Slapjacks or blackjack weapons are small, dense weapons designed for close-quarters fighting. They are often leather-covered and are weighted at the end in order to bludgeon your attacker. These small weapons pack quite a punch, causing major bruising and even lacerating the skin.

Unlike many of the other weapons on this list, you will need some experience and practice to use a slapjack effectively. You will also have to get very close to your attacker, and one blow probably won’t be enough to incapacitate them.

While slapjacks are not the weapon of choice against muggers, they do remain popular for fending off animals.
